Digital Board Games: The Road To Geekly Con 2016

By Phillip Canada on

Tara: Last year on our way to GeeklyCon I got kind of obsessed with board game apps. We had a couple of crazy layovers so it really helped to pass the time. Before I had even really met any of the other Geeklyinc contributors I asked the chat if anyone would want to play online with us. Bijaya enthusiastically agreed to join our game of Lords of Waterdeep. And for a complete newbie to board games, she was pretty damn good! This year for GeeklyCon travels, we want to continue the tradition! Make some new friends in the community and play some board games online while everyone is traveling to Portland this year! Feel free to leave your username in the comments below. If you’re flying, splurge for that airplane wi-fi and enjoy the ride. You’ve earned it.

Patchwork

Patchwork

Android/ iOS

$2.99

1-2 players

Phil: Much of my free time has been dedicated to playing Patchwork. A game about creating a quilt from mismatched patches of fabric and trying to get the least amount of holes in your quilt. While the theme is not fantastic the gameplay really makes up for it. You will be trying to fit the rejected Tetris pieces into a 9×9 area. Patchwork wonderful game to pass and play, battle the AI or even play online against friends. I cannot recommend this game enough.

Tara: One of my favorite games to play online with friends. Set in the Dungeons and Dragons universe, this game is a great introduction to the worker placement genre. The animation and artwork is top notch. Make sure you sign up for a Playdek account so you can play online!

Tara: Another quick and fun euro game from Days of Wonder. I steered away from this one for a long time because I thought the hype around it was too big. I completely regret it now. This can be a pretty fast one too! Bonus points for whoever makes the longest line of trains on the map!

Star Realms

Star Realms

iOS/Android

$6.99

1-2 Players

Deckbuilding is a really fun and accessible genre for those new to the board game scene. Star Realms is possibly the best deck builder to begin your journey. The campaign is great about getting you used to the game and teaching some advanced strategy while still offering a challenge. The online portion works smoothly allowing you to play against friends or in ranked play.

Splendor

Splendor

iOS/ Android

$4.99

1 player

Phil: Bring all the nobles to the yard by collecting gems in Splendor. A game about creating a gem empire. You will begin with hoble small mines and eventually build up to large storefronts in major metropolis. Each building acquired will provide you with a gem type giving you a static amount of gems to further advance your empire. While this version is for single player only the challenges and achievement hunting is rewarding.

Agricola

Agricola

iOS

$6.99

1-5 players

Michael: This game may have one of the most punishing AIs out of any of the games we have listed here. Still, look no further if you’re seeking a really robust game at your fingertips. You’ll have your own farm and trade in town for the supplies you need to grow and manage your crops, feed your cattle, and build your home. And no, this is not Farmville.

Subterfuge

Subterfuge

iOS/Android

Free or $9.99

2-10 players

Michael: It’s only fair to warn everyone that this game can take over a week to play. It can be brutal, and if you make any friends at GeeklyCon, this is the perfect way to lose them. Each player is racing to gather resources that they’ll mine using drills on islands at sea. Players can battle using submarines and special units that can change the outcome of a battle, and planning takes place hours in advance. For people with a diplomatic abilities and a strategic mind, this game may be perfect.

Hey, That’s My Fish!

iOS/Android

$1.99

1-4 players

Michael: This is exactly as silly as it sounds. Move your penguin around an ice shelf and gobble up fish before the other players. It’s a great game for something quick like when you’re waiting for your plane to take off.

  1. Hi,

I’ve played most of these games in their cardboard versions. They were all quite good. It makes sense then that these have been ported to an app.

Has anyone come across a game app that you felt really shouldn’t have been made into one? (Apologies if you’ve mentioned this elsewhere.)
