The Holiday Puzzle Collaboration

Postby Bapperson » Sat Dec 06, 2014 10:31 pm

On Twitter, GeeklyInc threw down the gauntlet. So head over to http://www.holidaybullshit.com/puzzle/ and get to work. Let's collaborate here and make it happen!

I'm not where I can watch the video, but I'm expecting we'll find clues there for sure. If anyone wants to review the video and let us know here...?

Also, I don't think it means anything, but there was a commented out section in the code:
<!--
<div class="updates">
<p>
<strong>UPDATE 00/00/0000</strong><br>
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet some text from CAH could go right here.
</p>
</div>
-->

I sat down with the video on the page and gathered together the letters under each person's name. They're clearly anagrams, but they don't all seem to have the same substitutions. Usually I'll use single letters or letters after apostrophes for clues, but they're inconsistent. Maybe someone better at anagrams than myself could have a look.

Mike Selinker: "Some sort of puzzle guy" Bqqmz cvuu up cpplmfu

Gaby Weidling: "Helped write some puzzles this year and apparently get super-sick before videos"

Josh Dillon: "A co-creator of CAH"

Daniel Dranove: "A co-creator of CAH"

Max Temkin: "A co-creator of CAH"

David Pinsof:"A co-creator of CAH"

Ben Hantoot:"A co-creator of CAH"

Eli Halpern: "A co-creator of CAH and king of the wood elves."

Scott Robbin: "Web dev of CAH" Eakuwywfslw tq ugdgj

Emily Haasch: "Resident Designer at CAH"

Jenn Bane: "Community manager of CAH"

Trin Garritano: "Events manager at CAH" Lebi hnm max pbgwhp

Henry Birdseye: "UX designer at CAH"
Hipit ndjg psbxhhxdch

Alex Cox: "Events Deputy at CAH"
Genpx qbja n gnfgl orirentr

Jon Buda: "One of the web devs for CAH"
Ywd ytifd'x xujhnfq

I also copied down each person's name and their stated job at CAH, thinking they may factor in somehow.

And did anyone else go straight to that Rubik's Cube the instant Birdseye said "clues are everywhere?"

Based on low vowel count, I was doubting anagram. So put together some scripts to attempt a simple caesar cipher. That worked as I got mostly intelligble results. I have the original text (in same order that was transcribed previously) followed by the converted text. At a guess, perhaps these are references to items in the video/podcast? Also, they've released a new episode but I haven't reviewed it.

bqqmz cvuu up cpplmfu: apply butt to booklet

smk eotxmrqz: gay schlafen
byul om liul: hear us roar

tujs dtzw jsajqtujx: open your envelopes
wjwhwjfyj dtzw mtqnifd: rercreate your holiday
lebi hnm max pbgwhp: slip out the window
hipit ndjg psbxhhxdch: state your admissions

Last year's buy-in was $12 and we received 12 "gifts."

This year's buy-in was $15. If they follow suit from last year, we'll receive 15 packages (the event's name is "Ten Days or Whatever..." after all). There also happen to be 15 ciphered phrases in that video. I'll take a closer look at the things I've received and try to find any connections. I'll also try to start scanning and uploading the items I get so that those who didn't buy in can examine them as well.

I subscribed to the Ten Days or Whatever of Kwanzaa, and received some stuff in the mail. Did anyone else subscribe?

There's a Reddit that lists out the gifts:

Okay, Reddittors are definitely better at puzzles than I am. We just have to be quicker than them at finding the ultimate solution.
