What should we play at the next Geekly Game Night?

Postby TheMikeBachmann » Sat Jul 12, 2014 8:31 pm

Last night's Geekly Game Night was a success and I'd love to do more of these nights, maybe once a month or so. Some of you have suggested a few games already and I've compiled them into a poll so we can vote on what to play next. If you have any other suggestions not included on the list, feel free to submit them!

Mount & Blade Warband, Rome Total War, Garry's Mod, or some Dota/League :P

I assume that AvP is the classic 2000 version (which was great) rather than the newest one (which wasn't).

A few more suggestions:
One of the Quake games, Quake 4 maybe.
Garry's Mod night, Prop Hunt, Trouble In Terrorist Town, Murder (there are lots more games but these are probably the best).
Star Wars Battlefront 2 - EDIT Forget this one, they shutdown multiplayer support last month.
Just Cause 2 (Multiplayer mod)
The Ship

I think I'd pay to see you and Tim kill the hell out of each other in Worms Armageddon.
YOLO...unless you're friends with Thoros of Myr.

I think I can still run a dedicated server for Battlefront 2 though. I also was thinking Battlefield 1942...

Here are suggestions from various LAN parties I've thrown with my friends:

* Unreal Tournament (Original) - Released in 1999, it surprisingly runs flawlessly on every system I've tried it on. Worst case, you can run software rendering and get a real blast from the past. Most machines should now be able to run this at Thousands of Frames Per Second. There is no frame lock.

* Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory - Free - A team based axis vs. allies world war 2 game, this was one of the first to have mission objectives, like CoD. Find it here: http://www.splashdamage.com/content/wolfenstein-enemy-territory-barracks

* Starcraft - Many of us already have this, but if we stick to Original, we could work out Spawn installs for multiplayer.

* Warcraft III - Many fun custom maps

* Age of Empires 2 - Classic. Compatible. "Start the Game Already!"

* Total Annihilation - Crazy old fun RTS. Balanced? Not so much. http://www.gog.com/game/total_anihilation_commander_pack

Doomsday - a fun open source doom engine mod to play DooM with. Includes modern features.

As I find more, I'll add them to the list.

I'm not sure that strategy games are a good choice for the Geekly Game Nights.

Most strategy games are not very noob friendly, and with 16 people there's bound to be a few that have no idea what's going on. Also, a game would generally last quite a while and if you get knocked out early that's a lot of sitting around waiting for the next game.

The beauty of genres like FPS/TPS or Racing games for example is that you can pretty much just pick up and play.

Good thought.

Freespace 2 - Space Combat sim. Engine has been open sourced, so there is a modern port. You just need the original game assets.

Steam is doing sales for Quakecon week, so we might want to keep our eyes on that for some old games to play.
I am a co-writer for SAYER.
I also have a personal website and a pretty active twitter feed.
Sometimes I publish stuff to Amazon.

Bachmann and I Tweet-talked, and we're aiming for Friday, 8/22. So get your voting done! At some point we'll need to close this thing down and say "here's what we're playing" definitively.

Apparently, I am the only person that remembers how awesome Savage was! It had so many cool elements to it.
I walk a fine line of upstanding, responsible adult and terrible, probably should live in my parent's basement nerd.
