Black Mirror, created by Charlie Brooker, is a British science fiction anthology that delves into our deep dependence on technology and the unanticipated consequences of it. What happens when your life and livelihood is dependent on how people rank you on social networks? What happens when we can punish people on a psychological level for having broken societal rules? What happens when people co-opt technology intended to help humanity to kill people instead?

All of these scenarios and more are played out in the 4 seasons of Black Mirror. Each episode is stand alone and each episode boasts a talented cast. Black Mirror alumnus include Jon Hamm, Daniel Kaluuya, Hayley Atwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Malachu Kirby, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Domhnall Gleeson, Alice Eve, Jerom Flynn, Rupert Everett, Donald Sumpter, Oona Chaplin, and many many more.

After hearing buzzing about Black Mirror for several months now, I decided to give it a go one weekend and boy am I glad that I did. Every episode is smart, interesting, and captivating. The plot of every episode has the same vein running through it – what if our use of technology gets out of hand – but, other than the sense of doom, every episode is different. Some episodes are scary, some are thrilling, some depressing, and some are even sweet. The show doesn’t imagine a far flung universe that is technologically ahead thousands of years. The story in every episode is relatable because it is our world, just a little different but one that is not completely unimaginable.

Do yourself a favor and watch this show – you will not regret it! Netflix acquired the series and all 4 seasons are currently available online.

  1. The episode “San Juniper” in the 2nd series (season) is one of the best Sci Fi offerings I’ve seen in quite some time. Love Black Mirror!
