Here are this week’s comic releases! We’re going to pull out a few we think you all should pick up, or at least keep an eye on! At the bottom will be a straight forward list of all comics showing up at your local stores/digital sites. The text list is courtesy of Preview Parser!

Batgirl #39
batgirl39

Batgirl is back once again this week with her brand new, modern style. Barbara Gordon has been trying to make Batgirl a more public hero figure in her new neighborhood of Burnside. As you can tell from the cover, things are starting to go awry. Ever since Stewart and Fletcher have taken the reigns on this book, it has been quite interesting. The style is very pop-art, and the writing is ‘modern’ in that the characters reference and use various web sites and apps that are parodies of actual things we use every day, like Twitter. So far this book has been very new-reader friendly, so I would recommend picking up this issue if you want to see what it’s all about. Also, this variant cover done by Cliff Chiang is brilliant:

Bitch Planet #3
BitchPlanet_03

Based on title alone, this book should immediately have your attention. Kelly Sue Deconnick is one of my favorite writers in comics right now, and everything I have heard about this book delivers on that hype. The story takes place on an all-women’s prison in space. So it’s really Orange is the New Black with a sci-fi twist. I also just read a description of the book that described it this way: “think Margaret Atwood meets Inglorious Bastards.” Now if that isn’t the highest praise imaginable, I don’t know what is. The last issue started to expand the universe with some scenes outside the prison, so this book is still very much on the ground floor. Now is a perfect time to hop on before this takes off in a big way. And just look at that sweet grind-house cover!

She-Hulk #12
SheHUlk12

We hardly knew ye. This is the last issue of the current She-Hulk run that was helmed by one of the comic world’s hot new writers, Charles Soule. I have heard nothing but high praise for the previous 11 issues, and I imagine this one is going to deliver in spades. What makes this book special is that it actually has a legit focus on She-Hulk’s other career, being a lawyer. What makes that part even more unique is that the author, Soule, was a lawyer! While many of you might just wait for the graphic novel of this series, I would still recommend picking up this swan song issue, if not just for the sentimental value it may one day have.

Pathfinder Origins #1
PathfinderOrigins1

I’m sure many of you who visit this site are well aware, if not intimately familiar, with the popular table top RPG Pathfinder. I am not personally (though would like to be), but I love fantasy settings for comics, and this looks to deliver in spades. The art style looks gritty, while at the same time fun and colorful. The story sounds a bit like the usual fantasy fair, but it’s really just a vehicle to tell a character driven story. A $4.99 price tag looks steep at first, but this issue comes with a fold out map and a bonus Pathfinder encounter! Neat!

Silk #1
Silk1

Probably the second most interesting character to come out of the Spider-Verse story arc, Silk, is getting her own series. For those not in the know, the back story for Silk is that she is the other person the original radioactive spider bit besides Peter Parker. She was secreted away by Ezekiel, another fellow with spider powers that is now dead. After the Original Sin event, Peter found out she existed, and freed her from her self-imposed prison. I find her to be a little weak right now, as she was just recently introduced. I’m not sure if she really has earned her own book. I suspect this may play more into the Secret War event that is happening soon. Regardless of her current development as a character, it’s always awesome to see another female lead title. Definitely worth a look!

Any of these striking your fancy? Excited for something that we didn’t write about but is listed below? Let us know in the comments!

P.S. I just now noticed that, with the exception of the Pathfinder comic, ever issue I picked out has a female lead. GIRL POWER! (But no really, this is an excellent sign of the times.)
