Repetition mixed with a weak story and a lack of vehicle customization kept Sol: Exodus from being more than a somewhat entertaining distraction. Space combat fans will find a lot to enjoy, but others may be put off by the lack of polish. It turns out that in space no one can hear you scream for Freespace 3.
If you are a Jurassic Park fanatic, you will be able to wring some enjoyment out of the locations and the aesthetic. In the end, Jurassic Park: The Game feels like it is trying too hard to be cinematic. It isn’t a particularly good movie and it’s a failure as a game.
On the off chance that you aren’t excited for next week’s launch of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, take a gander at this trailer, it should do the trick. After playing the demo, I would describe Reckoning as a cross between Fable and World of Warcraft, but with better combat.
Personally, I didn’t get to play Dark Souls, Saints Row the Third and Deux Ex: Human Revolution last year, and I could knock out all three of those for less than $80. This Buy Two Pre-Owned Games, Get a Third Free sale is not good for my wallet.
GameStop has a bunch of this past year’s big releases on sale for $10 to $30 off. Okay Assassin’s Creed Revelations is $30 off, and everything else is $10 to $20. There are some excellent titles to choose from though, like Batman: Arkham City, Gears of War 3 and Need for Speed: The Run all for $39.99 each.
We were all a little sad when Max Payne 3 was pushed back to May 15, 2012. Then we watched this video, about Max’s “targeting, weapons, and tactical movement”, and we became downright depressed. Look at how slow that Bullet Time™ is! It’s so slow! It is strange to think of Rockstar making a game with amazing shooting, but it isn’t strange to imagine Rockstar owning the month of May once again.
There are only a few games where buying the Collector’s Edition makes any sense, but Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is absolutely one of them. The game itself is worth $100 being that you could spend 200 hours playing it, and still have content left to burn. On top of that you get a frickin’ 12 inch dragon statue, an art book and a making of DVD. This is available for both Xbox 360 and PS3 (though you may want to hold off on the PS3 version since it has a nasty bug that still needs patching).
The PC downloadable versions of Dead Space and Dead Space 2 are on sale at Amazon for $5 each. Both games are chocked full of delicious tension and well worth a measly lincoln.
The Holidays would not be complete without the release of a Call of Duty game. In fact, the economy may even have suffered without it. Fortunately for all of us Modern Warfare 3 will fill your heart with the familiar sounds of gunfire and explosions. For better or worse MW3 is extremely similar to past titles in the series. Some will find this comforting while others will be left wanting more innovation.
