American Nightmare doesn’t reinvent Alan Wake, and it has about the amount of content that you would expect from a downloadable title. What it does is give us a little more Alan Wake, which is a welcome thing. On top of that it’s expertly paced despite retreading the same areas, and fleshes out the character of Mr. Scratch who is a wonderful and inventive villain.
Much like the train industry preys upon those who fear flying, the survival horror genre has taken advantage of their customers by offering increasingly laborious experiences. Do you know how long it takes to get across the country in a train? It takes forever. Do you know long it takes you to find anything worthwhile in Silent Hill Downpour? I sure don’t.
What MLB 12 The Show does better than anything else is capture the feel of baseball. It is all there, from the high level ideas to the tiniest details. The stadiums are gorgeous, the players move the way they should. The presentation will have you swearing you are watching a TV broadcast.
If you own a Vita, and are trying to choose between the two, I suggest getting the Vita version over the PS3. It isn’t quite as beautiful, and it only has most of the gameplay modes, but it is so darn close, that the freedom of having it on a handheld easily wins out. Maybe next year when owning a Vita is more common, it will be a harder decision, but for now, go with the Vita version all the way.
Snowboarding games, my long lost love, you have finally returned. The past SSX games were great, but with this new iteration, things are brought to a whole new level. The jumps are bigger, the tricks are crazier, and the graphics are gorgeous. This is the kind of game that will ruin your life under the right circumstances.
The game is beautiful, it’s fully voiced, and the combo-based action is more than a little satisfying. The only problem is that if Dynasty Warriors has already worn out its welcome for you, then Next isn’t going to do a single thing to change your mind.
Overall, if you’re a fan of the Uncharted series, I would call this a must-play for Vita owners. While it doesn’t add much to the canon, it is a blast to play. If you’re not already a fan of Uncharted, I don’t see Uncharted: Golden Abyss changing your mind.
Very few games deserve to be trimmed of content as much as Reckoning. The inevitable plot twist only mustered an “Oh neat” out of me after so many hours of mediocre gameplay and story. There is a fun game to be found within Reckoning, but without a guide you would have no idea which quests you should spend your time on. It isn’t that Reckoning is terrible; it is more that it falls short of most of its peers and what goals it sets for itself.
The Playstation Vita is very lucky to have such a fun experience at launch. Anyone that has picked up the new handheld system needs to own Mutant Blobs Attack. You won’t be able to find a more joyful experience on the platform, and it just so happens that it is also the cheapest game you can currently buy.
